Travelers on I-85 might do a double take, spotting a 16th century-style French château just a stone’s throw from Atlanta, Chateau Elan Winery, one of Georgia’s “original” wineries, released its first vintage in 1985. Wine drinkers and critics note that the winery has made tremendous improvements in the past few years. With nearly 200 acres of vitis vinifera and French-American hybrids, Chateau Elan produces roughly 40,000 cases per year—with a little help from outside sources. Early on, California fruit supplemented the harvest, but now, according to winemaker Dan Baldwin, only a small amount is shipped in. “Even the American Series, our second label, is mostly Georgia grapes,” he says. “The Merlot is 85 to 90 percent Georgia fruit.”
